Freshen Your Kitchen Sink Drain

Do you smell that? It’s frustrating to finish cleaning the kitchen and still have an offensive smell coming from the kitchen sink! Over time, food particles can build up and decompose in sink drains, creating an unappetizing odor. Routine plumbing maintenance can prevent larger issues from taking place later and keep your drain smelling fresh.

There are many opinions as to what products do this job best…from chlorine to premade scented tablets you can buy at home stores. I recommend baking soda or white vinegar.

This is why…

  • It is cheap and usually already in the pantry. Using the box of soda that you have had in the freezer or fridge when they are no longer as fresh and ready to be replaced is a good way to “recycle” the soda.
  • It is not corrosive to the pipes in your home
  • If there are household members who are sensitive to odors, they won’t be affected by baking soda
  • It is environmentally friendly

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a cleaning and deodorizing agent that is all-natural and completely safe for use in any drain. To use baking soda, pour about 1 cup into each drain opening. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes and flush with hot water. Baking soda cleans and deodorizes smelly surfaces and removes offensive odors. This works for sink drains and even bathtub drains.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is another deodorizing agent; when you pour 1 cup white vinegar into a drain on top of baking soda, a foaming action occurs. This foam works through the pipes to deodorize and to clean. Cover your drain openings and let the foam work through the pipes for about 30 minutes. Turn on the hot water and flush the drains with the water for about 10 seconds.
